Story
CIA operative Joe struggles to balance his personal and professional lives as the spearhead of the agency’s war on terror. Real-life military advisors helped create a more authentic execution of weapons handling, house cleaning, location finding, team-based activities, etc…. Mr. Sheridan knows how to take us into testosterone-fueled macho worlds without clichés and seemingly without an agenda. It is what it is.
No excuses needed
His characters are always grounded and he is extremely skilled at casting. But to be great, you have to write good roles for women. The writing should be just as good, if not better, than for men. Guys are simple. Women are smarter, more sophisticated.
They are strong and compelling
Beth from Yellowstone (great character and performance), the barrel riders, the lone female ranch hand (a fantastic Jen Landon as Teeter), all great female characters who fit naturally and effortlessly into the world of the story. Not just a ‘partner…’ or a T&A. He stepped up his game with Faith Hill’s excellent character crushing in "1883" followed by Dame Mirren in the misfire that was "1923". Now we have Zoe Saldana doing some of the best stuff of her career. I absolutely believe her as the CIA chief in an open marriage (nice touch).
True above all!
I buy De Oliveira as a broken woman with a burning rage who won’t give up and thank you, thank you, thank you to the writers/directors/producers for NOT letting her get the best of a fellow soldier with hundreds of extra pounds of muscle. . I think her character is much more interesting if she’s someone who needs to be knocked out cold, or just beaten to the ground before she gives up. Now let’s talk about Jill Wagner or should I say her hair? What about her face!
I’m buying it
From schmaltzy Hallmark crap to super bad specials? Special mention: Ms. Lanier as the ugly teenage daughter. I’m looking forward to the arc set for this loose canon, as long as they continue to avoid the clichés of teenage angst. Good actor, could be interesting…
