A vibrant journey through the life of Pharrell Williams, told through the lens of LEGO animation. Released the same year as Illumination’s Gru i Malci: Neustrašivi špijuni (2024); coincidentally, both films feature music by Pharrell Williams and are distributed by Comcast-owned studios (Universal Pictures and Focus Features, respectively). The opening logos for Universal Pictures, Focus Features, Tremolo Productions, and Lego Group are made of Lego bricks. In early screenings of the film, the Universal logo was not featured in the opening. There was nothing really that drew me to this movie other than LEGO

I like Pharrell Williams’ music, but he’s not someone I’m dying to listen to or see. I like the style he decided to take to tell his life story. As a LEGO movie, you can create whatever you want with whatever your imagination can come up with, but despite the flashy pieces and catchy tunes that some of us would recognize, it still falls flat.
So I learned something
I don’t think this biopic is a “wow, that’s me” The story is interesting despite the rags to riches perspective, but the way it’s told doesn’t really let you feel the struggles Pharrell went through to make it big. The movie isn’t a complete waste of time. I never realized how much of an impact Pharrell had on music. He’s created music for artists like Snoop Dogg, Jay Z, Gwen Stefani, and Justin Timberlake, to name a few. I would definitely watch this movie again, but I wouldn’t see it in a theater if I could go back.
But ultimately, there’s no denying Pharrell’s impact
Overall, it’s a shallow 90-minute story that only gives a tiny bit of insight into Pharrell’s journey to success. There’s definitely a “go after what you want” subplot, but you also have to work hard. It’s a flashy movie that uses LEGOs, but it never really tugs at the heartstrings. I wouldn’t recommend seeing it in theaters, or with family (unless you like the genre of music). There’s only one swear word in the movie, but it’s mostly bleeped out, except maybe three times.
